Building Webapps in Europe: Economy, Methodology, and Tips

Nicolas Paton, President, Bloogk

Date: Wednesday 19 September 2007
Time: 10:45 - 11:30
Location: Saal Maritim B

This talk has two objectives: An overview presentation of our experience, giving out a few tips for people willing to do a webapp; and a presentation of unrevealed webapps opportunities in (mostly) the European market.

Open your mind to new markets
Webapps don’t have to be as successful as Google to bring wealth and happiness to their creators. We have great examples of successful webapps out there: the already legendary 37 Signals, Joyent, Wollzelle, and Jaded Pixel. These are great models to follow. But there are other very attractive markets out there are still waiting for good software. We’ll explore a few available market places and open up to the audience for input.

Design
How many times shall this be said: design is about answering questions the users of your apps will be asking. We’ll try to describe the three major aspects of design for us: graphical design (mostly for information design), technical design through tests, and economical design (how to design a good webapp editing company).

Presentation of our experiences and tips
We have already done a few webapps for customers and are into our first public webapp. It has gone into private beta testing and will come out by June. Our goal is to give answers based on our experience: How to find and choose a good hosting company in Europe? How to deal with UTF8? We do not have a designer, why should we care? Testing takes time!
